The importance of drains after a tummy tuck
After the tummy tuck surgery, there is a significant amount of tissue that is elevated from the abdominal wall. This condition, if left that way, can put the patient’s health at risk. The space created can lead to a condition called seromas.
This is the reason why using drains after the tummy tuck surgery is extremely important. Surgeons need to place drains in the abdomen to remove the accumulated fluid during the surgery. Putting drains is proven to be the easiest way to avoid further fluid collection and collapse the space that was created during surgery to provide good results.
Surgeons normally place two drains in the abdomen to ensure that the fluid will be removed. In case the first one gets clotted or malfunctioned, there will be another one to serve the purpose. The drains usually need to stay in the abdomen within 7 to 10 days. The surgeon also needs to make sure that the drainage is less than 30 cc to remove it.
